Gropener the Bottle Opener

Calculation Tools

I saw this device on the web and wanted to see if I could make it. I knew it would require a lot of freehand bench work. I made two copies. A picture from the web was used along with a bottle cap to scale the project.

Gropener plan

Started with a 3/8" aluminum plate. Cut it with a hacksaw to 1 27/32" X 3 7/8". The 'hook' hole on the right ws drilled 3/8" diameter at a point 5/8" from the top and 5/8" from the right side. The magnet hole was drilled next to 1/4" diameter at 3/8" from the top and 3/4" from the right side. The large hole on the left was set 5/8" down and 2 7/8" from the right side and drilled 3/8". It was then reamed to the 29/32" diameter.

A large trapezoidal shape was removed with a hacksaw. This trapezoid was 5/8" high on the right side, ran along the bottom of the plate 2 15/16" and up at an acute angle to a point 1 3/16" above the bottom of the plate. A large part of the waste left above this trapezoid and to the left of the 'hook' was removed by milling. The part was then blued and lines were drawn using various circular scraps. It was filed to the lines while holding the work in wooden jaws in the vise. It was then sanded to 300 grit. A 1/4" X 3/8" rare earth magnet was glued in place. A second was made via a similar process.

Works great! Just have to make sure your two fingers on the bottle are as far from the bottle top as is comfortable.
